Regular seeds guide

How to choose regular seeds

Decide first whether you're growing or breeding. If you just want flower and are happy to sex plants, choose regular seeds the way you'd choose feminised — by climate fit, flowering time and structure — and plan to start twice as many seeds as the plants you want to finish. If you're breeding, look for strains described as stable or true-breeding, and note the lineage: crossing two very different parents gives variable offspring, which is fun for selection but frustrating if you want consistency. Landrace and heirloom genetics in this range are the ones to watch for growers building an Australian-adapted line, because they carry the vigour and adaptability that modern hybrids have often bred out.

Growing regular seeds in Australia

Regular plants grow exactly like feminised ones until sexing, which happens naturally as they mature — usually at four to six weeks from seed, earlier in strong sun. Check the nodes daily from week four: females show pairs of fine white hairs, males show small round balls that look like tiny bunches of grapes. Remove males the day you spot them unless you're breeding, because a single open male flower can pollinate every female in the yard and turn your harvest to seed.

Purpose Seeds to start Keep Timing note
Flower only, 3 female plants 6–8 Females only Sex by week 6, remove males immediately
Breeding one cross 10–12 Best 1 male, best 2–3 females Isolate the male indoors or far downwind
Selecting an adapted line 20+ Best performers each season Keep records; select over 3+ seasons

If you're breeding outdoors, isolate the male by distance (pollen travels hundreds of metres on a dry wind) or bring it indoors and collect pollen in a paper bag. Pollinate a single branch per female with a soft brush, tag it, and leave the rest seedless.

Our guide on breeding basics make your own seeds covers pollen collection, isolation and seed storage. If you'd rather skip sexing plants, the Feminised seeds range gives you all-female results. See also regular seeds why breeders love them.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of regular seeds will be female?

Roughly half, though it varies from pack to pack. Plan for about 50% and start more seeds than the number of female plants you want to finish with.

How do I tell male from female cannabis plants?

Around week four to six from seed, look at the nodes where branches meet the stem. Females show small white hairs (pistils); males show small round pollen sacs. Remove males promptly unless you're deliberately breeding.

Why would I choose regular seeds over feminised?

For breeding, for the extra vigour and genetic stability, or for growing traditional landrace-style genetics that aren't available in feminised form. They also cost less per seed.

How far away does a male plant need to be?

Cannabis pollen carries hundreds of metres on a dry breeze, so outdoors the only safe isolation is a different property or a sealed indoor space. For controlled breeding, collect pollen indoors and apply it by hand to a single branch.

Can I make feminised seeds from regular plants?

Yes, with a technique that induces a female to produce pollen, typically using colloidal silver. It's an intermediate project — the breeding guide on our blog covers the basics — but most home breeders start with simple regular crosses first.

How long do seeds I make myself stay viable?

Dried properly and stored cool, dark and dry — a sealed jar in the fridge with a silica sachet — home-made seeds keep for three to five years with good germination rates. Skip the freezer unless the seeds are fully dry. ---
