Cannabis seed collection
Cannabis seeds for Tasmania and cool climates
Tasmania, the Victorian highlands, the Blue Mountains, Canberra and the Adelaide Hills have one thing in common: a growing season that starts late, ends early and can drop below 10°C at night in March. This range is curated for cool climates and short seasons — early-finishing indicas, fast-version hybrids and autoflowers that go from seed to harvest in ten weeks, all with the cold tolerance to keep growing when the nights turn crisp. These strains stay compact, resist the damp that comes with cool autumn mornings, and finish in March or early April rather than waiting for a warm May that never arrives. Many of them are also the easiest strains in our catalogue to grow, so a short season doesn't mean a small or stressful one.

How to choose seeds for a cool climate
Flowering weeks is the number to filter by: 8 weeks or less for Tasmania and the highlands, up to 9 for Canberra and the Adelaide Hills. Within that, indica-dominant strains and their hybrids are the natural fit — they finish faster, stay compact, and the cool nights of a highland autumn bring out purple colours and preserve terpenes. Autoflowers are the safest option of all because they remove the finishing-time gamble entirely; sow in November and harvest in late January in peak sun. Avoid long-flowering sativas unless you have a greenhouse. If your site is also damp (Tasmania's west coast, mountain valleys with morning fog), add the mould-resistance filter, because cool and wet is harder on flowers than cool alone.
Growing cannabis in cool Australian climates
Extend the season at both ends. Germinate indoors in September under a window or a small LED, pot on once, and harden seedlings off for a week before planting out after the last frost. A cold frame or small polytunnel adds three to four weeks of growth in spring and protects flowering plants from an early autumn frost. Choose the warmest microclimate you have — north-facing, against a brick or stone wall that radiates heat at night, sheltered from wind.
| Region | Last frost | Plant out | Harvest by | Best types |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hobart, coastal TAS | Late October | Early November | End of March | Fast feminised, autos |
| Highland TAS, alpine VIC | November | Late November | Mid-March | Autos, 7-week fast versions |
| Canberra, Blue Mountains | Late October | November | Early April | 8-week feminised, autos |
| Adelaide Hills, Dandenongs | October | Late October | Mid-April | 8–9 week feminised |
Feed a little more generously than in hot climates; cool soil slows nutrient uptake. Water less — cool weather and short days mean plants use far less than the same plant in Perth. Watch overnight temperatures in March: below 8°C flowering slows noticeably, and a forecast frost means covering plants with a sheet at dusk or harvesting a few days early.

Frequently asked questions
Can cannabis survive frost?
Light frost will damage leaves and a hard frost can kill a plant, especially in flower. Plant after the last spring frost, and if autumn frost threatens before harvest, cover plants overnight or harvest slightly early.
When should I plant in Tasmania or the highlands?
Germinate indoors in September or October and transplant outside from late October to November once frost risk has passed. Choose strains that finish by early April, or use autoflowers planted in November for a March harvest.
Do cool climates affect potency or yield?
Cooler nights in flower can actually bring out purple colours and preserve terpenes, and yields are fine if the strain finishes in time. The risk is unfinished plants and autumn rot, which is why early-finishing genetics matter more than anything here.
Is a greenhouse worth it in a cool climate?
Yes, more than anywhere else in Australia. A simple polytunnel adds a month to each end of the season, keeps autumn rain off flowering colas and protects against frost. Ventilate on warm days; a closed greenhouse in November sun overheats fast.
Why do my plants turn purple in autumn?
Cool nights trigger anthocyanin production in strains with the genetics for it. It's harmless and often prized. If purpling comes with leaf drop and slowed growth, the plant may be too cold; if it's just colour, enjoy it.
Can I grow sativas in Tasmania?
Only fast-flowering sativa hybrids or sativa-leaning autoflowers. A traditional 12-week sativa flipped in February won't finish before May, by which point frost and rain will have ended the season. ---
