Fast-flowering cannabis seeds
Fast flowering cannabis seeds are the answer to the question every Australian grower in Victoria, Tasmania and the southern highlands asks: will it finish before the rain? The strains in this range flower in 7 to 9 weeks — some less — and are chosen specifically to be harvested in March and early April, ahead of the autumn wet that turns dense colas to rot. Fast doesn't mean small or weak; this range includes potent, heavy-yielding genetics that simply flip and finish quickly. You'll find fast-version photoperiod strains alongside the quickest autoflowers, with the flowering weeks front and centre on every listing. If you've lost a crop to bud rot in April, or your growing season is short and cool, start here.

How to choose fast flowering seeds
Work out your deadline first: the date your region's autumn rain or first frost typically arrives, minus two weeks for drying. Then pick strains whose flowering weeks, counted from when flowering begins (late January to mid-February in most of Australia), land before it. In Tasmania and the highlands that usually means 7 to 8 weeks; in Victoria and South Australia, 8 to 9. Fast-version photoperiod strains give you a full-sized plant and a single early harvest; fast autoflowers give you a smaller plant, total control over timing, and the option of a second run. If you're choosing between two strains that both make your deadline, take the one with the better mould-resistance note — an early finish and an open structure together are the safest combination in a wet autumn.
Growing fast flowering seeds in Australia
The strategy is simple: finish before the weather turns. Fast photoperiod strains still need the full vegetative season, so plant them out in October to November and let them grow; the advantage comes at the end, when they flip in early February and are ready to harvest in late March while slower strains are still weeks away.
| Region | Typical wet/frost onset | Harvest deadline | Flowering weeks needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tasmania | Mid-April | End of March | 7–8 |
| Victorian highlands, ACT | Mid–late April | Early April | 7–8 |
| Melbourne, Adelaide | Late April–May | Mid-April | 8–9 |
| Sydney, Perth | May | Late April | 8–10 |
| SE Queensland | Wet season Feb–Mar | Late January (autos) or after the wet | Autos timed for the dry |
Autoflowers in the fast range give cool-climate growers a second option: sow in November for a late-January harvest in peak sun, well clear of any autumn risk. Don't rush the dry just because you rushed the finish; a fast strain harvested in March still needs 10 to 14 days of slow drying and a proper cure.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a fast flowering strain?
Photoperiod strains that finish flowering in 7 to 8 weeks are considered fast; 9 weeks is average, 10 or more is slow. Autoflowers are measured from seed and are fast when they finish in 8 to 9 weeks total.
Are fast strains less potent?
Not in this range. Fast flowering was bred into potent strains by crossing them with early-finishing genetics, and the best modern fast versions lose little or nothing in strength or flavour.
Why does finishing time matter so much in Australia?
Because autumn in the southern states and the tropics brings rain and humidity right as dense flowers mature. Finishing in March instead of late April is often the difference between a full harvest and a mouldy one.
What's the difference between a fast version and an autoflower?
A fast version is a photoperiod strain bred to flower faster; it still needs shortening days to start flowering and grows to full size. An autoflower flowers on age regardless of daylight and stays compact. Fast versions yield more; autos give more control over timing.
Can I make a normal strain finish faster?
Slightly. Outdoors you can cover plants for 12 hours a day to force early flowering, but it's laborious and stresses the plant. Choosing a genuinely fast strain is far more reliable.
Do fast strains yield less?
A little, per plant, compared with an 11-week strain that finishes in time. Compared with an 11-week strain that rots in April, they yield infinitely more. In short-season regions they're the highest-yielding option in practice. ---
