Outdoor cannabis seeds for Australian conditions
Outdoor cannabis seeds for Australian conditions need to handle things a European strain never faces: 40°C days, UV strong enough to bleach leaves, monsoon humidity in the north and dry desert winds in the west. This range is curated for exactly that. Every strain has been selected for outdoor performance in at least one Australian climate zone, from mould-resistant sativa hybrids for Queensland to compact, early-finishing indicas for Tasmania. The southern-hemisphere season — plant September to November, harvest March to May — is built into every listing's timing guidance, and the climate tags let you filter for your region in one click. Whether you're growing in the ground, in fabric pots on a deck, or under shade cloth in the tropics, you'll find genetics here that were chosen for your weather rather than adapted to it after the fact.

How to choose outdoor seeds
Filter by climate tag first; it's the single most useful thing on the page. Within your climate, decide between a photoperiod strain (bigger plant, one harvest in autumn, more weather exposure) and an autoflower (smaller, faster, two harvests possible, less exposure). Then think about the specific site. A north-facing bed with afternoon shade and a fence for wind protection can grow almost anything; an exposed balcony wants a compact strain; a spot that stays damp in autumn needs a mould-resistant one. Height is worth checking against your privacy needs — expected outdoor height on each listing assumes a full season in the ground. Finally, in the tropics, choose strains by whether they'll finish before or after the wet season, because growing through it with a dense strain rarely ends well.
Growing cannabis outdoors in Australia
Outdoor growing here is generous: strong sun, long days and a warm season that runs six months or more in most of the country. The challenges are heat, water and, depending on where you are, humidity or drought. Start plants in dappled shade and move them into full sun over a week; even sun-loving cannabis burns when it goes from a windowsill to a January afternoon in one step.
| Climate | Site advice | Water | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tropical | Full sun, maximum airflow, raised beds | Frequent in the dry; drainage in the wet | Bud rot in the wet season |
| Subtropical | Morning sun, breezy position | Deep, 2–3 times a week in summer | Humidity in Feb–Mar |
| Hot & dry | Morning sun, 30% shade cloth at midday in Jan | Deep and early morning; heavy mulch | Heat stress, drying out |
| Temperate | Full sun, wind protection | Deep, 1–2 times a week | Late-season rain |
| Cool | Sunniest, warmest spot; greenhouse if possible | Moderate | Frost before finish |
Plant in the ground where you can — roots reach cooler, damper soil and plants grow larger — or use 40-litre-plus fabric pots. Mulch 5 to 10 cm deep everywhere except the tropics in the wet. Stake early; a two-metre plant with heavy colas is a sail in a March storm. Inspect for caterpillars from mid-summer and for rot in the last month.
Our regional guides — growing cannabis queensland, growing cannabis victoria, growing cannabis western australia and more — cover the specifics. For plants that must finish before the rain, see Fast flowering; for the tropics, start with Mould-resistant.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best time to plant cannabis outdoors in Australia?
September to November for photoperiod strains, once frost risk has passed. Autoflowers can be planted any time from September to January. In the tropics, timing around the wet season matters more than frost.
Can cannabis handle full Australian sun?
Yes, once established — cannabis loves light. Seedlings and young plants benefit from partial shade in the first weeks, and in the hottest inland regions, 30% shade cloth during midday in January prevents leaf burn.
How big do outdoor plants get in Australia?
Photoperiod strains planted in September can reach two to three metres by March with good soil and water. Autoflowers stay under a metre. Check the expected height on each listing and choose accordingly for your space and privacy.
Do I need to water every day in summer?
In pots during a heatwave, possibly. In the ground with mulch, deep watering two or three times a week is usually enough and grows stronger roots. Check by pushing a finger into the soil; water when it's dry 5 cm down.
What pests should I expect outdoors?
Caterpillars (especially budworm in late summer), spider mites in dry heat, aphids and grasshoppers. Inspect daily from February. Most are manageable with hand removal, neem oil or a Bt spray for caterpillars; the important thing is catching them early.
Can I grow outdoors year-round anywhere in Australia?
In the frost-free tropics and subtropics, autoflowers can be grown almost year-round, with the dry season being the best window. Elsewhere, the outdoor season runs September to May; winter grows need to move indoors. ---
