Cannabis laws in Northern Territory

Cannabis remains a prohibited drug in the Northern Territory. How a minor matter is handled can depend on the amount, location, circumstances and the person involved.

The starting point

NT Government guidance identifies possession, supply and manufacture of prohibited drugs—including cannabis—as offences.

Why circumstances matter

Minor-offence pathways do not legalise cannabis. Location, prior history, quantity and evidence of supply can affect whether an infringement, diversion response or prosecution is available.

Driving is a separate issue

The NT separately prohibits driving with a prohibited drug in the blood. A minor possession pathway does not protect a driver from road-law consequences.
